Your treatment will depend on the stage of your chronic kidney disease Treatment (CKD). Stages one, two and three CKD can usually be treated by your GP.

Chronic kidney disease is identified by a blood test for creatinine. Higher levels of creatinine indicate a lower glomerular filtration rate and as a result a decreased capability of the kidneys to excrete waste products. Creatinine levels may be normal in the early stages of CKD, and the condition is discovered if urinalysis (testing of a urine sample) shows the kidney is allowing the loss of protein or red blood cells into the urine. To fully investigate the underlying cause of kidney damage, various forms of medical imaging, blood tests, and often renal biopsy (removing a small sample of kidney tissue) are employed to find out if a reversible cause for the kidney malfunction is present.

An estimated 11 percent of adults aged 20 or older have early (stages 1–3) CKD, and the prevalence of every stage of CKD is rising. Early stage CKD is usually asymptomatic and typically requires blood and urine testing for diagnosis. Patients with CKD are at an increased risk for mortality, cardiovascular (CV) disease, fractures, bone loss, infections, cognitive impairment, frailty, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). CKD is most commonly due to hypertension or diabetes and is less commonly a result of primary renal disease. Typically, treatment for CKD stages 1–3 is directed at underlying conditions or CV risk factors.

If you have chronic kidney disease , you will need to decide on the next stage of treatment. Your choice will be whether to have treatment with dialysis (a means of artificially replacing some functions of the kidney), a kidney transplant, or other treatment options that involve less intervention, also known as supportive or conservative care.
